Two of the three teams still unbeaten in league play will square off as the Lakeland University football team travels to face Benedictine University in a key Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Village of Lisle Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.
The Muskies and Eagles have decided the conference champion with their meeting each of the last two years, and this year's game could do so as well. Benedictine enters at 2-0 in the NACC (4-1 overall) while Lakeland is 1-0 in conference play (3-2 overall).
The Muskies were tripped up by Adrian (Mich.) 28-21 on the road in a non-conference matchup last week. The Bulldogs scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:40 left in the game and held on to win a matchup featuring the preseason favorites in the NACC and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Logan O'Neill (
Fr.-Spokane Valley, Wash.) came off the bench and threw touchdown passes of 67 and 66 yards to
Kezlow Smith (
Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.), but the Bulldogs hogged the ball for 39 minutes, 59 seconds of the game to win.
The Eagles won a shootout with Concordia Wisconsin last week, rallying in the final minutes for a 51-49 win. Quarterback Ryan Sample led a 75-yard drive in the final two minutes that finished with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Javon McBride with 34 seconds left. That capped a record-setting day for Sample, who set school records passing for 449 yards and six touchdowns, and the Eagles set a new school mark with 611 yards of offense.
