It’s been a few years since we had a weekly feature on Lakeland student-athletes (our most recent one was rolling along nicely until Covid hit) but we’re resuming a regular spotlight of Muskies this year, with Lakeland senior Mikayla Rieck helping us get these going again. Our first feature this year is on senior women’s tennis student-athlete Baylee Babcock, part of a team that is off to a good start this year in the NACC. Here’s more on Baylee, her tennis, and about her off the court too:

Name: Baylee Babcock

Grade: Senior
Major/Minor: Psychology major and Spanish Minor

Question: How is the season going so far?

Baylee: We are currently 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. We have shown so much improvement over the season and since last year. We are playing very consistently and beating teams we should beat. There is high hopes for a good playoff seed for our team!

Q: What got you into playing tennis?

B: Going into my freshman year of high school, I participated in a volleyball league, and I realized that I really disliked volleyball. I still wanted to be active in a fall sport, so I decided to try out tennis. I bought my racket two days before the season started.

Q: What is your favorite part of playing tennis?

B: Tennis has been one of the most technique-oriented sports for me. It really has challenged me to continue to work on my form whenever I hit the ball. If you are not fundamentally sound it is super hard to compete in matches.

Q: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your sport?
B: My biggest obstacle would be my shoulder. I have had shoulder surgery three times on my right shoulder, so it gets difficult to play sometimes when it gets sore.

Q: Favorite
recovery method?
B: After a match, I like coming back to campus and taking a nap. I also enjoy drinking light blue Gatorade and eating spaghetti.

Q: What would we find you doing off the court?

B: I enjoy hanging out by the pool table in the campus center, watching The Bachelorette/Bachelor, and if I am at home working with my show cattle.

Q: What is
the weirdest food combination that you love?
B: I like eating Famous Daves sweet and spicy pickles with either mayonnaise or mustard.

Q: What words of advice do you have for
underclassman in the sport of tennis/ in sports in general in college?
B: I would say to just have fun while playing because it goes by extremely fast. I would also say to take care of yourself physically and mentally, so you can compete at your best each time!
