Muskies Persevere for 1-0 Win Over Benedictine

The women's soccer team (10-7-1, 7-3-1 NAC) snagged a 1-0 win over Benedictine University in their final regular season Northern Athletics Conference game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 25, on their home field.

Although Lakeland showered the Eagles' defensive line with shot attempts, tallying 15 shots on goal for the game, the squad was unable to get one to drop until freshman midfielder Celine Elzinga knocked in a pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Hopfinger in the 81st minute of play.

"I told the girls at halftime to just keep leaning on them, and they'll eventually fall over," said head coach Dave Madsen. "We were getting frustrated in the first half because we were creating a lot of chances to score, but our shots just weren't dropping."

The win provides the Muskies with a great deal of momentum heading into the first round of NAC Tournament play this Saturday, as they have won four out of their last five conference games.

"It's a pretty big win because the past two to three games the girls have really stepped up their play," Madsen said. "We're putting on the field what we've been trying to achieve all year. The girls didn't take this game for granted, and that'll be a big help if our focus is like that during the conference tournament."
