SHEBOYGAN - The Lakeland women's soccer team surrendered a late goal, but closed out a 3-1 victory over Alverno in a Northern Athletics Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Lakeland.

After the Inferno (7-9 overall, 3-6 NAC) scored in the 80th minute to trim the Muskie advantage to 2-1, Lakeland's Hannah Landgraf (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) beat a defender following a throw-in and put it in the back of the net from the right post.

"We labored a little bit after we got our 2-0 lead," Lakeland coach David Madsen said. "I think Alverno's goal refocused our team.

"The little things make a difference in the bigger picture, and those are what won us the game."

Lakeland (3-12, 2-7) was aggressive from the start, taking 15 first-half shots to Alverno's four. As a result, sophomore forward Lindsay Rogers (Sheboygan, Wis.) took a cross from sophomore Kristina Borts and put it over the goalkeeper just under 15 minutes into the contest.

"We created some chances, and I'm glad we got that goal relatively early in the first half," Madsen said. "If we could have gotten another one earlier, we could have made it a little easier on ourselves."

Landgraf, a freshman who joined the team six matches into the season, picked up her first assist of the year on what turned out to be the decisive goal. In the 53rd minute, freshman midfielder Celia Klemstein (Milwaukee, Wis.) took a pass from Landgraf and put it past the goalkeeper to give the Muskies a 2-0 advantage.

Junior goalkeeper Whitney England (Ashwaubenon, Wis.), who nearly posted her first shutout of the season, made two saves for Lakeland.

The Muskies close out the non-conference portion of their schedule tomorrow at home against Finlandia at 11 a.m.
