The Lakeland College gridiron squad will see if its defense can deliver another gem this weekend when the Muskies travel to face Rockford Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Muskies (2-3 overall, 2-0 NACC) posted their second straight convincing win last week, rolling past Concordia Chicago 35-7. Lakeland's defense again was a rock, holding the Cougars to 92 yards of total offense, piling up 11 sacks and allowing -13 yards rushing.
Romain Johnson (
Jr.-Pontiac, Mich.) and
Matt Hill (
Sr.-Iron River, Mich.) both had 2.5 sacks and
Josh Schneider (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added two sacks as part of the Muskies' 19 tackles for loss.
Kendrick Burks (
Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) also rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and went over the 2,000-yard mark for his career to lead an offense that also was very productive with 452 total yards.
Rockford (1-4 overall, 0-1 NACC) is coming off a 38-12 non-conference loss to Hope (Mich.) on the road last week. The Regents scored a touchdown on their first drive of the third quarter to briefly close within 17-6, but Hope answered with a score on its next drive and added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Andrew Stochl completed 12 of 21 passes for 161 yards and two interceptions for Rockford, while Milton Phillips catching four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
This is the seventh meeting ever between Lakeland and Rockford. The Muskies have won all six previous meetings, all coming over the past six years, including a 35-21 win at Rockford last year.
