The Lakeland College women's volleyball team showed its resilience once again Friday night in a three-set sweep of Rockford (Ill.) University at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies played without their setter and were down to nine healthy players but still won in convincing fashion, defeating the Regents 25-20, 25-16, 25-14. Lakeland won its third straight match in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play and continued to improve its chances for qualification for the NACC Tournament, improving to 12-14 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Caleigh Galvan (
Jr.-New Lenox, Ill.), fourth in NCAA Division III in digs per set, moved into the setter spot for a night and finished with 37 assists as part of a solid offensive performance. The Muskies as a team hit .212 with 45 kills and 20 errors in 118 attempts, and
Kathy Flanagan (
So.-Midlothian, Ill.) finished with 10 kills, one of four players with at least seven kills.
Brooke Aiazzi (
Jr.-Yerington, Nev.) slid into the libero spot and led Lakeland with 21 digs.
Emily Thomas (
Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) also stepped into a larger role and finished with a season-high 10 digs while also serving effectively, not recording an ace but keeping the Regents off balance and serving a match-high 24 times.
The Muskies trailed for only short stretch in the entire match, when Rockford (8-15 overall, 1-7 NACC) led by a point three times in the early stages of the third set.
Lakeland also completely stopped an opponent's top hitter for the second time this week, as Rockford's Katelyn Hasken finished with just one kill and a -.167 attack percentage. The Regents barely broke even hitting on the night as a team with 22 kills and 21 errors in 113 attempts (.009 hitting percentage).
Allison Errthum (
Fr.-Joliet, Ill.) and
Jenna Ward (
Jr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) both added nine kills each and
Courtney Naser (
Fr.-Altoona, Wis.) chipped in seven kills for the Muskies. Errthum also finished with 14 digs.
Ashley Simmons led Rockford with six kills and added 10 digs, while Taylor Rossi led the team with 14 assists and 15 digs.
Lakeland is home again Saturday night when it plays its final home match of the regular season, hosting Concordia University Chicago at 7 p.m.
