After two road games, the Lakeland College football team is back in front of the home folks Saturday when it hosts Aurora University at 1 p.m. at Taylor Field in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies will be looking for their fourth consecutive dominant win in conference play after a 34-7 win over Rockford last week. Lakeland (3-3 overall, 3-0 NACC) outgained the hosts 434-146 as the defense was a wrecking crew yet again. The Muskies held the Regents to -18 yards rushing, sacked the quarterback six times, forced five turnovers and nearly posted a shutout on third down (1-for-13). On offense, quarterbacks
A.J. Veloz (
Fr.-Whiting, Ind.) and
Michael Whitley (
Fr.-Vidalia, La.) combined to throw for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Veloz threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another as Lakeland took a 27-7 halftime lead before cruising through the second half.
Aurora enters at 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Spartans were defeated by Benedictine last week 26-0, and their lone win was a 20-7 victory over Rockford on Oct. 4. Head coach Rick Ponz is in his first year leading the program, while running back Jake Apple leads the NACC in rushing with 677 yards in his first six games.
Aurora holds a 16-14 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to Lakeland's first year of playing football in 1934. The Muskies won last year's meeting 35-32 at Taylor Field as
Dylan Van Straten passed for 266 yards and also rushed for 108 yards.
