The Lakeland College women's volleyball team got the Homecoming weekend off to a good start by taking care of business for a three-set sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College Friday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies defeated the Warriors 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, jumping on the visitors early and snapping a six-match losing streak. Lakeland improved to 9-13 overall and improved to 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies seized control early against the winless Warriors, never trailing in the first two sets. Lakeland also hit a solid .259 for the match, with 43 kills and just 15 errors in 108 attack attempts.
The Muskies opened the match with five straight points in winning the first set comfortably, and the second set followed a similar script with Lakeland moving out to a quick 6-1 lead and eventually leading by as many as nine. The third set was dicier with WLC pulling out to an early 4-1 lead, but the Muskies went on a five-point run for a 9-7 lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
Jenna Ward (
Jr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) registered 12 kills, leading a pack of Muskies contributing on the attack.
Kathy Flanagan (
So.-Midlothian, Ill.) and
Allison Errthum (
Fr.-Joliet, Ill.) both finished with nine kills,
Brittni Scoles (
Fr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) added seven and
Courtney Naser (
Fr.-Altoona, Wis.) six.
Caleigh Galvan (
Jr.-New Lenox, Ill.) finished with 16 digs,
Taylor Levitt (
So.-Schaumburg, Ill.) passed out 35 assists and Flanagan led the team with three service aces.
Wisconsin Lutheran dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-4 in the NACC. The young Warriors were led by Andrea Hafemeister with seven kills and Megan Wierzbicki with 11 digs.
Lakeland has a week's break before its next match next Friday at Aurora (Ill.) University at 7 p.m.
