The Lakeland College football will attempt to stay on a roll Saturday when it steps out of conference to face Alma (Mich.) College at noon Central time at Bahlke Field in Alma, Mich.
The Muskies (4-3 overall) will go for their fifth win in a row after defeating a stubborn Aurora team 14-0 last week to improve to 4-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland got another stellar defensive performance, holding the Spartans to 171 yards of offense, including 7 of 24 passing and just 2 of 16 third down conversions. The Muskies also got big plays from
Yaphay Harvey (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) with two interceptions and
Trevor Tanck (
Sr.-Baileys Harbor, Wis.) with three sacks on defense, while the offense received a lift from backup quarterback
Michael Whitley (
Fr.-Vidalia, La.), who rushed for 117 yards and also threw a touchdown pass to
Josh Hardy (
Jr.-Logansport, Ind.) to extend the Muskies' lead.
Alma (2-5 overall) are on the opposite streak, having lost four in a row after being defeated by Hope (Mich.) 33-7 last week. Hope scored 19 points in a span of 4:16 late in the second quarter to take control of a tie game, after Alma scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter as wide receiver Tyler Watters hit fellow receiver Erik Hines for a 54-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. The Scots are members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and are 0-4 in the MIAA this season.
Lakeland and Alma are meeting for the second straight year at Alma. The Muskies won last year's meeting, as
Dylan Van Straten found
Richard Micheaux (
Jr.-Taylor, Mich.) for an 8-yard touchdown with 24 seconds to play and
Ramsey Riehl kicked the extra point for a 21-20 Muskie win, capping a comeback from a 20-0 second quarter deficit. The Scots lead the all-time series 3-1.
Saturday's game is also a homecoming of sorts for a number of Lakeland players. A total of 22 Muskies on the football roster are from Michigan.
