Muskies shoot to keep momentum up against Cougars

After picking up its first win of the season, the Lakeland College football team will aim to keep up the good work this weekend when it faces Concordia Chicago on the road for a 1 p.m. game in River Forest, Ill.

The Muskies (1-3 overall, 1-0 in conference) won their Homecoming game and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener last week, rolling over Wisconsin Lutheran College 47-7. Lakeland dominated on offense and defense, scoring with big plays on offense while the defense completely stifled the Warriors. A.J. Veloz (Fr.-Whiting, Ind.) passed for 250 yards and three touchdowns, including scores of 79 yards to Kezlow Smith (Jr.-Pontiac, Mich.) and 29 yards to Michael Esiobu (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.). The Muskie defense also held WLC to 65 yards and four first downs in the entire game, as well as a 0-for-15 mark on third downs. Yaphay Harvey (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown, and Trevor Tanck (Sr.-Baileys Harbor, Wis.) made 10 tackles including four tackles for loss.

The Muskies will play in their second straight Homecoming game this week, as this weekend is the occasion for Concordia (0-3 overall, 0-1 NACC). The Cougars lost their NACC opener last week to Concordia Wisconsin 47-20. Concordia Chicago gained 21 first downs in the game but was hurt by three turnovers in the first half, which hurt the Cougars as the Falcons scored 24 consecutive points in the third quarter.

Saturday's game pits the Muskies again across from former coach Randy Awrey. Awrey is one of the most successful coaches in Lakeland football history, coaching at Lakeland from 1994-98 and compiling a 35-14-1 record. His 1997 Muskie team posted a 10-0 record, the only undefeated season in school history, and his .710 winning percentage is the best of any football coach in Lakeland history.

Live audio and video and live stats for the game will be available from Concordia. Live video with audio will be available at http://www.cuchicago.edu/live. Live statistics also will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/cuchicago/football/xlive.htm.
