RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Joey Burris (
Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) hit the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lakeland College men's basketball team a dramatic 86-83 win over Concordia University Chicago.
Burris scored the final of his 26 points with a three-pointer from the left corner as time ran out, snapping the Muskies' three-game losing streak and keeping them alive in their quest to finish third in the final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings. Lakeland is now 18-7 overall and 13-6 in the NACC, and can clinch a tie for third place and the third seed in the conference tournament with a win at Edgewood College Wednesday night.
The Muskies needed a win of any kind for morale after the team's first extended rough stretch of the season and found a way to grind it out despite some struggles again. Lakeland fought back from a double-digit second half lead to make for a back-and-forth game down the stretch and one in which both teams had multiple opportunities to win in the final seconds.
The Muskies rallied back to take a six-point lead late in the second half at one point, but found themselves trailing 83-81 with just 35 seconds left, though, after a free throw by Marcus Elston, but
Brandon Hagenow (
So.-Sussex, Wis.) hit two free shots just six seconds later to tie the game.
The Cougars (5-19 overall, 2-17 NACC) had a chance to take the last shot, but Jacob Oakley missed a three-pointer with seven seconds left which Lakeland rebounded. The Muskies took a timeout, then rushed the ball up the court and got a jumper from
Kurt Jansen (
Jr.-Wrightstown, Wis.) that missed and was rebounded by Concordia.
The Cougars took a timeout with a second left, but in their own backcourt threw it away out of bounds with no time running off the clock. With another chance,
Travis Kell (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) inbounded to Burris, who hit the game-winner as the horn went off.
Lakeland trailed much of the contest as Concordia lit it up from outside with 10 three-pointers and also won the rebounding battle 51-37, with three players finishing with at least 11 rebounds. The Muskies were down as much as 13 in the first half before rallying back to within 43-38 at halftime.
Burris kept Lakeland afloat in the second half in particular with 17 of his 26 points. He finished the game making 10 of 19 from the field, including 5 of 11 from three-point range.
Hagenow and
Stan McKenzie (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) both added 15 points each, and Hagenow also was big in the second half with 12 of his 15.
James Oshkeshequoam (
Sr.-Keshena, Wis.) added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Jansen scored 10.
The Muskies shot 45.6% from the field (31 of 68), while the Cougars made 31 of 70 from the floor (44.3%), including 10 of 30 from three-point range. Brandon Stinson finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Elston scored 17 points and grabbed 11 boards, and Mike Walmer added nine points and 12 rebounds.
