Muskies welcome Flying Dutchmen for visit Saturday

The Lakeland College Muskie football squad will host another tough non-conference opponent when the Hope (Mich.) College Flying Dutchmen come to Taylor Field as part of the MIAA-NACC Challenge Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Muskies enter with a 0-1 record after losing to Carroll 33-7 in their season opener. A.J. Veloz scored the lone touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak on 4th-and-goal in the second quarter, and the freshman passed for 162 yards in his first collegiate game. Kevyn Lewis made 12 tackles on defense in his first game for Lakeland, which was idle last week.

Hope enters with a 1-1 record.
The Flying Dutchmen defeated Augustana (Ill.) College 37-27 last week, as Robert Kish threw for four touchdown passes in his first career collegiate start. Hope is a perennial contender in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, with 15 conference titles and 31 top-two finishes in the last 46 years.

This is the fourth meeting ever between the two schools. Hope holds a 2-1 lead in the series and won the last meeting in 2011, a 28-14 win in a game at Lakeland. The Muskies' lone win came the year before, a 27-12 victory in Michigan in 2010.

The game is part of the challenge event between the MIAA and the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, a scheduling agreement matches up all seven MIAA schools against all seven NACC schools in non-conference games. In the first two years of the agreement each league has won seven of the 14 matchups, with the MIAA posting a 5-2 record last year while the NACC was 5-2 in 2012.
