Lakeland unable to dent Edgewood’s undefeated conference mark

MADISON – The Lakeland College women's volleyball team missed a chance to even the match after two sets and was defeated by conference-leading Edgewood College in three sets Tuesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

The Eagles stayed undefeated in league play by defeating the Muskies 25-16, 25-23, 25-20. Lakeland lost for the third time against one of the conference's heavyweights and is now 9-14 overall and 3-3 in the NACC.

The Muskies had a good chance to put the Eagles on their heels in the second set, putting together a 10-4 run including three kills and a service ace by Allison Errthum (So.-Joliet, Ill.) to take an 18-12 lead late.

Lakeland as unable to close the set out, though, as Edgewood (15-8 overall, 6-0 NACC) scored nine of the next 10 points to go ahead 21-19. The Muskies rallied back to take a 22-21 on another kill by Errthum and still was tied at 23-23, but the Eagles scored the last two points of the set.

Edgewood was in control of both the first and third sets, trailing only once briefly in the third. Lakeland trailed by as many as 11 in the first set but hung close in the third, down just 21-19 late.

Errthum led the Muskies with nine kills while LeShay Jones (Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) added eight kills with just one error in 22 attacks. Taylor Levitt (Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) had 27 assists, while Caleigh Galvan (Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) finished with 20 digs. Emma Bruder (Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) totaled 12 digs and Brooke Aiazzi (Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) added 10 digs.

The Muskies hit .094 for the match with 35 kills and 21 errors in 149 attack attempts. Edgewood hit .226 with 39 kills and 111 errors and also had a 6-1 edge in service aces and a 4-0 margin in blocks.

Lakeland is on the road again Friday when it travels to face Concordia University Chicago at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
