Muskies to take on unfamiliar opponent with visit from Trine Saturday

The Lakeland College football team will take on an opponent it has rarely seen before when it welcomes Trine (Ind.) University to Taylor Field for a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

This is just the second meeting ever between Lakeland and Trine, with the first coming 12 years ago when Trine was known as Tri-State University. The Muskies won that prior meeting 30-13 back on Sept. 6, 2003 at Taylor Field. Lakeland scored 17 consecutive points to close the game after the Thunder had tied the game in the third quarter. Brent Luebke passed for a touchdown and ran for another and Nick Hunter rushed for 129 yards.

The Muskies and Thunder both come in with matching 3-2 records. Lakeland easily handled Concordia University Chicago 41-0 last week to improve to 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Michael Whitley (So.-Vidalia, La.) passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another before coming out of the game with six minutes left in the second quarter and Lakeland holding a 41-0 lead. Kezlow Smith (Sr.-Pontiac, Mich.) caught six passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and with his third catch of the game became the school's all-time leader in career receiving yards. The Muskies defense also was stingy all day, holding the Cougars to 68 yards of total offense including minus-four yards rushing on 32 attempts.

Trine took its second loss of the season last week, falling to undefeated Olivet (Mich.) 49-24 in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup. The Thunder led 10-7 after one quarter before the Comets scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take control. Taylor Masiewicz passed for 294 yards for Trine and receivers Gage Corner (11 receptions, 144 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Jeffrey Barnett (10 rec., 131 yds.) both had big days, but the Thunder was held to 51 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

Live video, audio and statistics for the game will be available from Lakeland College at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/lc/. Baxter Colburn will call the play-by-play. Trine University also will have a radio broadcast available from WEAX Radio FM 88.3 in Angola, Ind., and online at http://stretchinternet.com/live/weax/. Aaron Coyle will call the play-by-play with Josh Valadez providing analysis.
