Lakeland men’s soccer season closes with home loss to Falcons

The Lakeland College men's soccer team saw its season end with an 8-0 loss to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champion Concordia University Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon at home.

The Falcons clinched the NACC regular season title with the win, improving to 15-2-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Lakeland finished its season 2-16 overall and 1-9 in league play.

Concordia got on the board just 31 seconds into the match when goalkeeper Alec Brew made a long pass down the right side of the field aided by the wind. Keegan Van Dusseldorp received the pass and fired a shot that hit the left post and caromed into the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Muskies' best chances came early, as forward Charles Apostolik (Fr.-New Castle, Colo.) followed almost immediately after with a pair of opportunities. His first shot went wide, while his second was on goal and saved by Brew.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute on a goal by Jordan Moehn, who cleaned up the rebound after a shot by Diego Campos. Lakeland had another opportunity just over a minute later when Tyler Shultis (Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) aimed a header on goal that was stopped by Brew.

Concordia added three goals late in the first half, including an own goal by the Muskies, and then scored three more times in the second half. Lakeland had just one more shot on goal the rest of the way, when Renan Asato (Jr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) struck a hard free kick over a defensive wall that curled but was caught by Brew.

Apostolik (three shots), Asato and Shultis (two shots each) combined for all seven shot attempts for the Muskies. Thomis Mannebach (So.-Florence, Wis.) made 13 saves in goal for Lakeland.

Campos recorded a goal and three assists to lead the Falcons, who outshot the Muskies 25-7.

The match was final for three Lakeland players: Franco Herrera (Naucalpan, Mexico), Logan Massey (New Franken, Wis.) and Nick Thompson (Milwaukee, Wis.), while fellow seniors Bradley Schwartz (Forestville, Wis.) and Mirko Tadic (Santiago, Chile) were unable to play due to injury.
