Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Muskies have chances but lose close 2-1 decision to Maranatha Baptist

Maranatha Baptist University scored the only goal of the second half to defeat the Lakeland College women's soccer team 2-1 Thursday late afternoon in a non-conference match.

Natascha Vinz scored at 66:22 of the match after a pass from Audrey Risma as MBU rallied from an early deficit. The Sabercats defeated the Muskies for the sixth time in the last seven meetings between the schools.

For Lakeland (4-9 overall), the match was one of missed opportunities. The Muskies missed several point-blank chances that would've given them a chance to build on an early lead or put them back ahead after the visitors tied it up.

Lakeland did score first just 10:13 into the match. Taryn Allen (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) received the ball on the right side in the offensive end and took several touches forward before lifting a bending shot over goalkeeper Hannah Anderson and into the left corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Allen had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 24th minute when she got behind the defense, but with Anderson bearing down her shot went right off the goalkeeper's hands, and a rebound attempt with her left foot went off to the right.

The Muskies had another chance in the 40th minute. Sophia Hower (Fr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) had just come into the match at a forward position and almost immediately received the ball behind the defense, but her hard shot attempt was deflected away by Anderson.

Maranatha Baptist (5-2-1 overall) had tied the match less than a minute earlier when Alison Hernandez shot from straight on and scored with an assist from Natascha Vinz. Lakeland's chances in the second half, with Allen and Mimi Pulido (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) both getting chances before the Sabercats scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

Melissa Noll (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) made four saves in the first half in goal for the Muskies, while Jessica Carter (Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) made two saves playing the second half. An evenly played match saw MBU finish with a slim 11-10 edge in shot attempts, with Pulido firing five times and Allen adding four shots for Lakeland.

The Muskies are on the road Saturday to face Concordia University Chicago at 1 p.m. in River Forest, Ill. Lakeland will be back home Sunday when it welcomes Illinois Institute of Technology for a non-conference match at 2 p.m.
