Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Muskies cold again in loss to Simpson; Carthage wins Tip-Off Tournament

Simpson College used a big second quarter to seize control and went on to defeat the Lakeland College women's basketball team 77-58 in the consolation game of the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.

The Muskies struggled to find their stroke from outside for the second straight game, dropping to 0-2 on the season. The Storm won the tourney's third place game, while Carthage College won the tournament title with a 55-45 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University in the championship game.

Lakeland shot 31.8% for the game, making 21 of 66 shots. That included 5-for-33 shooting from behind the arc, and the Muskies never were able to rally after falling behind in the first half.

Simpson actually went on two big runs in the first half. The first was a 15-0 run over a span of 3:37 to take a 15-2 lead in the first quarter.

Lakeland recovered nicely from that one, scoring nine straight points to draw back within three. Callie Olson (Sr.-Middleton, Wis.) came out hot at the start for the second straight game, hitting a pair of three-pointers, and Kayla Clark (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) added four free throws in a 10-0 spurt over just two minutes that made it 15-12.

The Storm reasserted control in the second quarter, outscoring the Muskies 19-2 to take a 40-19 lead after a short jumper by Noreen Morrow. Simpson would lead 43-28 at halftime and never led by less than 14 in the second half.

The Storm out-rebounded Lakeland 48-39 for the game. More importantly, the visitors made better use of their work on the offensive glass, with a 20-10 advantage in second chance points despite both teams finishing with 17 offensive rebounds each.

Clark led Lakeland with 15 points, while Olson and Maddy Doll (So.-Florence, Wis.) both added 11 points each. Bailey Grayvold (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) also added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Morrow led Simpson with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Maddie Bosworth added 15 points and Britney Boland chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Storm also made 19 of 21 free throw attempts (90.5%).

Carthage won the championship game behind an outstanding all-around effort from Morgan Harris, who finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on the way to tourney most valuable player honors. Bailey Gilbert also added 12 points as the Lady Reds took the lead late in the first quarter and never trailed again, despite a late rally from the Prairie Wolves that knocked a 14-point lead down to five late.

Gilbert joined Harris on the all-tournament team. Olson, Bosworth and both Courtney Cook and Felicia TeKolstke of Nebraska Wesleyan also were named to the all-tourney squad.

Lakeland returns to action Wednesday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
