Muskies run past Martin Luther, score 100 in home opener

Brandon Hagenow (Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) scored 15 points, Travis Kell (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) notched a double-double and five players in all scored in double figures as the Lakeland College men's basketball team rolled past Martin Luther (Minn.) College 103-64 Saturday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies shook off a ragged start to win their home opener and get their first win of the season. Lakeland also defeated Martin Luther for the third time in four years and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Knights.

The Muskies (1-1 overall) shot 56.3% from the field (36 of 64) and also outrebounded the visitors 56-41. Kell finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Brandon James (So.-Rockford, Ill.) totaled 14 and both Zach Van Engen (Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and Pat McDonald (Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) added 10 points each.

Lakeland only trailed once in the opening minutes, but the Knights (0-4 overall) hung around for a time. Martin Luther trailed just 26-23 when Dan Leverance scored inside with 6:19 left in the first half, but the Muskies followed with a 12-1 run for a 38-24 lead, and the margin never slipped below 12 again.

Lakeland led 50-34 at halftime and then blew the game wide open with a 38-9 run, eventually leading by as many as 43 points on three occasions.

A total of 18 players played for the Muskies and 15 scored at least one point. Lakeland received 45 points and 30 rebounds from its bench, including eight rebounds from sophomore Eric Nygaard (Plymouth, Wis.).

Josh Rathje led the Knights with 13 points. Leading scorer Todd Brassow came in averaging better than 24 points per game but was held to 10.

Martin Luther shot just 29.9% (23 of 77), including only 4 of 24 on three-pointers. The Knights were playing their second game in less than 24 hours after a 76-67 loss at Maranatha Baptist Friday night.

The Muskies jump right into Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when they host Aurora (Ill.) University at 7 p.m.
