STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Lakeland College women's basketball team put a hearty scare into the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, trailing by two points in the fourth quarter before falling 68-59 Tuesday night in a non-conference game.
The Muskies dropped to 0-4 with their third non-conference loss to a state foe, but not without making some noise. Lakeland trailed 49-47 with 8:43 left in the game and still by just six with under four minutes to play before the Pointers (3-1 overall) closed the game out.
The Muskies led for a good portion of the first half and trailed 27-24 at halftime only after UWSP's Lexi Roland hit a three-pointer just before the first half buzzer. Lakeland never led again but stayed in contact, trailing 46-41 after three quarters and getting back within two after three-pointers by
Kayla Clark (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) and
Lexie Greenheck (
Sr.-Oostburg, Wis.) early in the fourth.
The Pointers followed Greenheck's triple with six straight points, and the Muskies never got closer than six the rest of the way. Lakeland was held to four points over the final five minutes.
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) led the Muskies with 14 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 4:06 to play. Clark and
Maddy Doll (
So.-Florence, Wis.) both added nine points each, with Doll also chipping in six rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Muskies shot 34.6% for the game (18 of 52) and made 16 of 17 free throw attempts (94.1%). UWSP hit 22 of 53 field goals (41.5%) and outrebounded Lakeland 43-31.
Lakeland opens Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Saturday when it travels to face Edgewood College at 2 p.m. in Madison.
