The Lakeland College men's basketball team gained a measure of revenge for three losses to Edgewood College last year with a decisive 74-52 win Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies shot efficiently, owned the glass and led almost from start to finish in picking up their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season. Lakeland also defeated the Eagles for the first time in five meetings after losing both regular season meetings a year ago and being eliminated by Edgewood in the NACC Tournament each of the last two years.
The Muskies (2-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) in particular dominated in the frontcourt, led by
Travis Kell (
Jr.-Madison, Wis.) and
Tanner Hackl (
Sr.-West De Pere, Wis.). Kell scored a game-high 19 points and added nine rebounds, just missing his third straight double-double, while Hackl did post his second straight double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. The duo helped Lakeland to a 44-27 rebounding advantage and a 43-18 lead in points scored in the paint.
Edgewood (0-3 overall, 0-1 NACC) led only once at 3-2 in the early minutes, though the Eagles stayed close for a half. In fact, Lakeland led by six just before halftime, but
Brandon James (
So.-Rockford, Ill.) found Kell under the basket on an inbounds play from the baseline for a layup just before the break and a 35-27 lead.
The Muskies carried over that strong finish into the second half, outscoring the guests 11-2 to stat the half. Hackl's layup with 16:48 left in the game made it 46-29, and Lakeland would never lead by less than 12 the rest of the way.
Pat McDonald (
Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) added 11 points, and
Brandon Hagenow (
Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) also pitched in with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. The Muskies shot 49.2% from the field, making 29 of 59 shots.
Lakeland also got the job done defensively, holding Edgewood to 35.2% shooting (19 of 54) and just 3 of 19 from three-point range. Adam Freitag scored 12 points to lead the Eagles, while no other player scored more than eight points.
The Muskies now go back on the road Tuesday to face Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon at 7 p.m. The rival Falcons were picked first in the NACC preseason poll.
