MADISON – The Lakeland College women's volleyball team was unable to dent Edgewood College's unbeaten run through Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponents this season, as the Muskies fell in three sets to the Eagles in an NACC Tournament semifinal Thursday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
Edgewood played up to its No. 1 seeding, going on to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-19 win to advance to the tournament championship game Saturday. The Eagles, who are now 12-0 against NACC teams this year, will face No. 2-seeded Dominican (Ill.) University, which defeated Concordia University Wisconsin in four sets Thursday night.
Fourth-seeded Lakeland saw its season end at 17-15. The Muskies also saw their eight-match winning streak end with their second loss of the season to Edgewood (24-9 overall).
Lakeland hit just .076 for the match with 29 kills and 19 errors in 132 attack attempts. Those numbers unfortunately were well off the Eagles' pace, as the hosts hit .262 with 42 kills and just nine errors.
The Muskies played from behind almost the entire night, never leading in the first two sets, even while pushing Edgewood late in the second set. Lakeland closed an earlier six-point deficit down to one when a kill by
Courtney Naser (
So.-Altoona, Wis.) made it 22-21, but the Eagles followed with two straight points and closed out the set after another kill by Naser.
The Muskies briefly led early in the third set and were still tied at 11-11 when Edgewood made its move, first with two straight points, and later with a five-point run to take a 21-14 lead to take control of the set.
Naser and
Allison Errthum (
So.-Joliet, Ill.) both had seven kills to lead Lakeland, and Errthum also added a team-high 16 digs.
Taylor Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) passed out 26 assists and added 11 digs, while
Caleigh Galvan (
Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) finished with 15 digs in her final match. Galvan closed out the season with a school-record 749 digs and finished her career with 2,336 career digs.
The match was the final one for four Lakeland seniors, including Galvan,
Brooke Aiazzi (
Yerington, Nev.),
LeShay Jones (
Pontiac, Mich.) and
Emily Thomas (
Stevens Point, Wis.).
