Muskies rally in second half to top Alverno for second win

Bailey Grayvold (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half and the Lakeland College women's basketball team limited Alverno College to 27.0% shooting over the final 20 minutes in a 62-58 comeback victory Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies also received a quality all-around game from Maddy Doll (So.-Florence, Wis.) plus key contributions from their bench in claiming their second victory of the season and their second in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Lakeland improved to 2-6 overall and is now 2-2 in conference play.

Grayvold finished with season highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds, including 15 points and seven boards in the second half alone. Her efforts helped the Muskies rally from a seven-point deficit early in the second half.

Alverno led 30-28 at halftime and increased that lead to 35-28 early in the third quarter, but Lakeland outscored the Inferno (4-5 overall, 2-4 NACC) 17-8 the rest of the quarter for a 45-43 lead after three periods. Callie Olson (Sr.-Middleton, Wis.) came off the bench to score five points in the quarter and Doll added two more baskets in the paint, part of a game in which she shot 5-for-6 from the field in totaling 11 points, five rebounds plus five blocked shots.

The guests scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to regain a 47-45 lead, but the Muskies took the lead for good with a 7-0 run. Grayvold scored all seven points and in all scored Lakeland's first 11 points of the quarter.

The Muskies never trailed again, though Alverno stayed close and cut the lead to two after Tessa Mersberger hit a 30-footer with 4.2 seconds to play to cut the lead to 60-58. Olson was fouled with two seconds left and hit two free throws to ice the win.

Olson finished with seven points, while Jessica Beaudry (Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) added eight points off the bench, all in the first half, in her first action of the season. Lakeland finished with a 15-9 advantage in bench points and also outscored Alverno 37-21 in the paint.

The Muskies shot 38.5%, making 20 of 52 from the field, and also hit 19 of 28 from the charity stripe (67.9%). Alverno made 23 of 71 shots (32.4%) and was led by Gabby Hood with 12 points. Brooke McBain added 11 points and nine rebounds and Donna Zehner contributed four points and a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench.

Lakeland is home again for its next game Saturday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 2 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium in the team's final game before Christmas.
