Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Muskies roll up 114 points in romp over Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Travis Kell (Jr.-Madison, Wis.), Brandon James (So.-Rockford, Ill.) and Tanner Hackl (Sr.-West De Pere, Wis.) all posted career highs scoring and the Lakeland College men's basketball team wore out the scoreboard for its highest point total in 20 years in a 114-91 win over Concordia University Chicago Tuesday night.

The Muskies scored their most points since a 148-102 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering Feb. 14, 1995. Lakeland also won its second straight game and improved to 5-3 this season and 3-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Muskies shot a blistering 56.3% from the floor (40 of 71) and also hit 29 of 38 from the free throw line (76.3%). Lakeland never trailed in the game after scoring 54 points in the first half and following that up with 60 in the final 20 minutes.

Kell, James and Hackl combined for 72 points as well as 29 rebounds. Kell scored 31 points on 13 of 17 shooting and tied a career mark with 12 rebounds. Hackl also added a double-double with 20 points and 12 boards, while James scored 21 points off the bench with a nearly flawless shooting performance, making 6 of 7 from the field-including all three three-point attempts-plus 6 of 6 free throw attempts.

Lakeland scored the first five points in the game, and Concordia (2-3 overall, 2-2 NACC) only could get as close as a tie once after, knotting the score at 19-19 with 13:34 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Justin Saar. The Muskies responded with nine straight points, though, and eventually went ahead by as many as 16 in the first half before taking a 54-43 lead into the break.

Lakeland shot 52.9% (18 of 34) in the first half, but that was just a prelude for a second half in which they'd hit 22 of 37 shots (59.5%). The Cougars briefly closed to within nine early in the second half, but the Muskies again ran off eight straight points, with Kell's layup making it 64-47 with 17:02 left in the game.

The Muskies kept a sizeable lead the rest of the way and eventually built their lead as high as 27 points. The scoring pace continued the rest of the way, and Lakeland hit the 100-point mark with 4:09 left in the game on a free throw by Pat McDonald (Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.).

Brandon Hagenow (Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) added nine points and McDonald also chipped in eight. Mark Gryszkiewicz (Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) also came off the bench and handed out a career-high six assists.

Kylan Anderson scored 29 points for the Cougars, who shot 35 of 78 (44.9%). Lakeland also outrebounded the hosts 45-36.

The Muskies are back in action Thursday night when they travel to face Northland College in Ashland, Wis., for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
