Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles edge Muskies for 62-60 win, home game in NACC tourney

A baseline jumper by Brandon Hagenow (Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) was ruled to come just after the buzzer, sending the Lakeland College men's basketball team to a 62-60 loss against Edgewood College Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

In both teams' regular season finale, Edgewood picked up the win as well as the chance to host another meeting between the two teams. The Eagles clinched the fourth seed in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament and now will host the No. 5 seed Muskies Saturday at 2 p.m. in a quarterfinal game.

Lakeland (15-10 overall, 11-9 NACC) had a pair of chances to tie the game in the final minute after Joey Burris (Sr.-Kiel, Wis.) converted a three-point play with 1:03 left to get the Muskies within two. Burris missed a contested layup with 12 seconds left, but Edgewood's Dylan Rusch missed the front end of a one-and-one to give Lakeland another chance.

Burris took the ball again and drove inside the three-point line, where he was able to shake free for an off-balance 18-footer with two seconds left. The shot came off to the right and was rebounded by a hustling Hagenow, who turned around and released a 12-foot jumper from the baseline that rattled in but was waved off immediately by officials.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout, with neither leading by more than seven in a game that had five ties and 10 lead changes. Lakeland led 33-28 at halftime and last led 53-52 after an offensive rebound and putback by Tanner Hackl (Jr.-West De Pere, Wis.) with 5:20 left.

The Eagles (13-12 overall, 12-8 NACC) were just 1 of 12 from three-point range at one point in the game but made 4 of their last 5 from deep, and Jake Heuer's three put Edgewood ahead 55-53. The teams then traded baskets and were tied at 57-57 until Trevor Neale scored inside and Rusch canned a three-pointer from the right wing as the shot clock expired for a 62-57 lead with 1:51 left.

Lakeland and Edgewood shot nearly identical percentages, with the Eagles at 44.6% (25 of 56) and the Muskies shooting 26 of 59 (44.1%). Lakeland was just 2 of 10 from three-point range, though, and also committed 10 turnovers to the Eagles' seven.

Burris led the Muskies with 13 points and also added six rebounds. Hackl recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Kurt Jansen (Sr.-Wrightstown, Wis.) added 10 points. Lakeland also out-rebounded the Eagles 35-31.

Neale led Edgewood with 21 points, making 9 of 12 field goals while operating almost exclusively from the paint.

The game was the final at home for four Lakeland seniors, including Burris, Jansen, Cade Carroll (Shawano, Wis.) and Stan McKenzie (Racine, Wis.).
