Game Recap: Baseball |

Lakeland bats are quiet in doubleheader loss to Illinois Tech

Lakeland College had a quiet day at the plate, scoring just one run over two games in losing both ends of a baseball doubleheader against Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon.

The Muskies were defeated 1-0 in the first game of the twinbill and fell 13-1 in the second game of the non-conference matchup. Lakeland was able to string together just 10 hits over the two games combined and is now 4-16 overall this season.

Pitchers Brandon Glaeser (Jr.-Newton, Wis.) and Travis Stever (So.-Brillion, Wis.) combined to pitch a five-hitter in a very close first game that ended up being decided just two batters into the game.

Glaeser tossed four innings and allowed only a single unearned run and four hits while striking out one and walking two. Stever came on in the fifth and allowed just one hit over three innings, striking out a pair and walking two.

The Scarlet Hawks (10-2 overall) scored a single unearned run in the top of the first. Austin Boos singled sharply to right field to start the game and then raced all the way to third after a fielding error, and he came home when William Cronin followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The Muskies had a chance in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Ryan Boettcher (Sr.-Bonduel, Wis.) singled with two outs and Kyle Delahaut (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) dropped in a single down the left field line, but the game ended when. Drew Richard (Fr.-Kieler, Wis.) hit a line drive right at the shortstop Boos to end the game.

Illinois Tech dominated the second game, scoring three times in each the first and second innings, twice in the third and four more times in the top of the seventh. Brian Colon-Rodriguez hit a pair of home runs and drove in five and Michael Malfeo also added a three-run homer.

Lakeland mustered just five hits, led by Luke Bacci (Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) with two hits. The Muskies scored their lone run when Jared Rear (Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) walked with two outs in the top of the first and A.J. Dollinger (Sr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) followed with a booming double to center to make the score 3-1.

Christopher Leopold (Fr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) started and allowed six hits and eight runs (seven earned) with four strikeouts over three innings. Cal Zimborski (Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) came on and threw the remaining four innings, allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned) with a strikeout.

The Muskies are home again on Saturday when they host Aurora (Ill.) University for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
