Bryce Skelton (
Jr.-Delavan, Wis.) hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Lakeland College baseball team a 6-5 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering, a win that propelled the Muskies to a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Lakeland came back in the second game for a 9-3 victory, wrapping up the team's first two wins in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games and improving the team's record to 6-20 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
The Muskies have struggled at the plate of late but came alive on Saturday with 24 hits over the two games. Skelton and
Jared Rear (
Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) did a good share of the damage, combining for eight hits, six runs batted in and five runs scored.
Rear crushed the ball all day and was 3-for-3 in the opener with three runs driven in, including a big two-run homer. His blast to left field put Lakeland ahead 5-4 in the eighth inning before MSOE (5-21 overall, 2-8 NACC) tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth.
Skelton had two hits in each game and drove in the winning run in the first game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. After the Raiders tied it in the top of the frame,
Brandon Glaeser (
Jr.-Newton, Wis.) singled to lead off the inning,
Luke Bacci (
Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) reached on a perfectly executed bunt and
Brady Callahan (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) drilled a single to left to load the bases, setting the stage for Skelton's flare to center to score Glaeser.
Callahan also had four hits over the two games with two hits in each. Bacci, Glaeser and
A.J. Dollinger (
Sr.-Ashwaubenon, Wis.) also added three hits apiece.
Five players also had two hits each in the second game, as the Muskies overcame an early 2-0 deficit with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Bacci's two-run single in the fifth put Lakeland ahead 3-2, Skelton hit a pair of run-scoring doubles, and
Kenny Pekarek (
So.-Sagola, Mich.) also had an RBI single.
The Muskies also received quality outings from both starting pitchers.
Luke Mandich (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) earned his second win of the season with a complete game in the opener. Mandich scattered 10 hits and allowed just two earned runs while striking out five and lowering his earned run average to 3.12 for the season.
Drew Richard (
Fr.-Kieler, Wis.) got the call in the second game and worked out of a jam in the first inning to limit MSOE to a pair of runs. He settled down and kept the Raiders off balance the rest of the way, getting 16 outs via the fly ball and striking out three for his second win of the season.
Lakeland is on the road again tomorrow when it faces Marian University in a conference doubleheader in Fond du Lac beginning at 1 p.m.
