Muskie bats smoking again in doubleheader sweep of WLC

FRANKLIN, Wis. – Lakeland College scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and went on to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College 10-6 to complete a sweep of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader Monday evening.

The Muskies also wiped out the Warriors 12-0 in five innings in the first game, completing their second straight sweep of a conference doubleheader and third twinbill sweep in three days. Lakeland is now 12-18 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

The Muskies slugged the ball in both games again, finishing with 31 hits, including nine extra base hits. Six players had at least three hits over the doubleheader, including Jessica Beaudry (Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) with five and Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) with four. Seven players also finished with at least two runs driven in, led by Sami Jo Williams (So.-Sussex, Wis.) with five RBIs for the day.

Lakeland and Wisconsin Lutheran (6-17 overall, 1-11 NACC) went back and forth in the second game, but the Warriors scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Muskies answered in the eighth, as Angela Tribuzio (Fr.-Huntley, Ill.) doubled to drive in two runs, Hilton followed with a double to score Tribuzio, and Beaudry later reached on an error to score Hilton.

Savannah Stenlund (Fr.-Rapid River, Mich.) closed the door in the bottom of the inning, retiring the final two hitters on strikeouts to earn her second win of the day. She also pitched a five-inning shutout in the first game, striking out six and allowing just four hits.

Lakeland scored four runs each in the second, third and fourth innings in the opener in a dominant win. Williams had a single, double and triple and drove in four runs, Beaudry was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored and
Hailey Jester (Fr.-Salem, Wis.) added two hits and drove in a pair.

Ten different players finished with hits as the Muskies hammered out 14 hits in the first game. Lakeland was even more productive in the second contest with 17 hits, with Beaudry, Hilton and Ashley Hough (Sr.-Rapid River, Mich.) with three hits each and Tribuzio, Carly Brault (Fr.-Brillion, Wis.) and Calie Delisi (Fr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) all with two hits each.

The Muskies receive some well-deserved days off and are back in action Thursday when they host Finlandia (Mich.) University at 3 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
