Gonzalez, Lakeland sweep again to push winning streak to 10 games

Rosa Gonzalez (Fr.-Elwood, Ill.) drove in seven runs on the day and had the go-ahead hit in the second game as Lakeland College swept Rockford University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Gonzalez delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Muskies rallied to defeat the Regents 10-8 in the second game of the twinbill. Lakeland also tripped up Rockford 9-1 in five innings in the opener, and the two wins edge the team's record closer to the .500 mark at 16-18 overall as well as 7-9 in the NACC.

With the two victories, the Muskies extended their winning streak to 10 games. Lakeland is on its longest streak since winning a school-record 23 straight games in the 2009 season.

Gonzalez finished with seven runs batted in on the day as well as six hits, including a home run in the first game. Gonzalez and Bella Wilkinson (Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) both also drove in four runs in the second game as Lakeland and Rockford went back and forth in an offensive shootout for five innings.

The Regents led 1-0 early before the Muskies bounced back with three in the bottom of the first and two more in the second. Wilkinson and Gonzalez both doubled in a pair of runs as Lakeland built a 5-1 lead.

Rockford (4-26 overall, 0-16 NACC) came back to tie with four runs in the third, but Wilkinson tripled to score two more runs to make it 7-5 in the fourth. The Regents answered with three in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, but the Muskies tied it again on a bunt single by Ashley Hough (Sr.-Rapid River, Mich.) and went ahead when Gonzalez followed by driving in Hough and Sami Jo Williams (So.-Sussex, Wis.) to put Lakeland ahead for good.

Hough and Gonzalez also both drove in three runs each and Calie Delisi (Fr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) added a two-run single to start the scoring as the Muskies dominated the opener, scoring in four of five innings.

Hough drove in single runs in the second, third and fifth innings while Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the second inning and added a run-scoring ground out to send home Hailey Jester (Fr.-Salem, Wis.) in the third. Lakeland built a 7-0 lead after two innings and finished the game in the fifth when Williams tripled to score Jocelyn Yeager (So.-Elm Grove, Wis.) and came in to score when Hough bunted her home to end the game on the eight-run rule.

Savannah Stenlund (Fr.-Rapid River, Mich.) earned the win in both games, including a one-hitter in the first game in which she did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. She also came on in relief in the second game and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Hough also added three hits, four RBIs and four runs scored and was one of two seniors honored in between games. Elizabeth Zimmerman (Sr.-Shawano, Wis.) also was recognized as part of Senior Day activities and started the second game, allowing two hits and five runs (one earned) in 2 1/3 innings.

The Muskies are scheduled to be in action again tomorrow when they travel to face Milwaukee School of Engineering for another NACC doubleheader. The games have been moved up from noon to an 11 a.m. start in an attempt to beat forecasted rain in the Milwaukee area Sunday.
