Muskies fall twice to Falcons, now wait on possible NACC tourney berth

MEQUON – The Lakeland College softball team is now in the uncomfortable position of waiting to see if it will play in the postseason after the Muskies wrapped up their regular season with a pair of losses to Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Muskies went on the road and challenged one of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference before losing to the Falcons by scores of 13-8 and 4-2. Lakeland hit it well in the first game but was outhit by Concordia and then pitched well in the second game but was outpitched by the hosts.

Lakeland concluded its regular season with a 19-21 record and a 10-12 mark in conference play. The Muskies now await the results of several important conference games which will determine whether they qualify for the six-team NACC Tournament next weekend.

Alverno College and Edgewood College are both competing with Lakeland for the final spot in the tourney, and the Muskies can clinch a spot if Alverno loses at least two of its final three games against league leaders Aurora (Ill.) University and Benedictine (Ill.) University and Edgewood loses twice to Wisconsin Lutheran College tomorrow. If the Muskies and one or both teams finish in a tie, the berth will go to tiebreaker procedures.

Lakeland hammered out 14 hits in the opening game, but Concordia finished with 17 hits and built an early 9-2 lead that the Muskies could never come back from.

Angela Tribuzio (Fr.-Huntley, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Rosa Gonzalez (Fr.-Elwood, Ill.) added a two-run home run and drove in three. Sami Jo Williams (So.-Sussex, Wis.), Bella Wilkinson (Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Hailey Jester (Fr.-Salem, Wis.) all added two hits each as Lakeland twice slugged its way back within four runs late before Concordia (25-13 overall, 16-6 NACC) pushed the lead out again.

The Muskies took an early 2-0 lead in the second game as Jessica Beaudry (Fr.-Gladstone, Mich.) singled to plate Gonzalez in the first and Williams doubled in the second to score Jocelyn Yeager (So.-Elm Grove, Wis.).

The Falcons cut the lead in half with a run in the third and then put together the deciding rally with three runs in the fourth inning. Carly Sobrilsky hit a two-run home run to put Concordia ahead and Karly Jackson later added an RBI single, and Lakeland was unable to answer. The Muskies put runners at second and third in the fifth and then went quietly in the final two innings.

Williams had a pair of hits in the second game and joined Tribuzio as Lakeland players with four hits on the day. Savannah Stenlund (Fr.-Rapid River, Mich.) took the loss in the second game, pitching a complete game and allowing eight hits and four runs with a strikeout, while Concordia's Emily Brekke pitched five scoreless innings in relief and allowed just two hits in earning the win.
