Lakeland loses twice on the diamond to NACC-leading Concordia

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Chicago pitchers allowed just six hits over two games in sweeping the Lakeland College baseball team in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon.

The NACC-leading Cougars showed why they are the top team in the conference, defeating the Muskies by scores of 12-1 and 5-1, including a first game that ended after seven innings. Lakeland dropped to 9-28 overall and 3-15 in the NACC with two games remaining in its season.

The Muskies mustered just four hits in the first game and two in the second and were especially quiet after promising starts. Lakeland scored in the early innings in both games but was held scoreless from the third inning on.

Concordia (23-13 overall, 15-3 NACC) did its scoring with big innings. The Cougars scored three in the first and eight in the third inning in the opener, including six unearned runs. The hosts also put up four runs in a deciding third inning in the second game.

Lakeland answered Concordia's three runs in the opening inning of the first game with a run in the second. Jared Rear (Jr.-Belleville, Wis.) led off with a walk, stole second and later came home after Sterling Dixon (Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) reached on an error.

The Muskies scored first in the nightcap, also on the strength of an error. Luke Bacci (Jr.-Grayslake, Ill.) led off the game with a walk, went to second on a ground out by Ryan Boettcher (Sr.-Bonduel, Wis.), stole third and then scored as Rear reached on an error by the shortstop.

Luke Kelly (Jr.-Marinette, Wis.) pitched a complete game in the opener and allowed 13 hits and 12 runs, with seven of those runs unearned. Travis Stever (So.-Brillion, Wis.) also tossed his first complete game of the season in the second and allowed nine hits and five runs with three strikeouts and three walks. Rear was the lone Muskie to record more than one hit on the day, with singles in both games.

Lakeland concludes its season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon beginning at noon.
