Lakeland tops Piedmont, falls to Susquehanna on first day in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. – Allison Errthum (So.-Joliet, Ill.) hammered out 22 kills over two matches, leading the Lakeland College women's volleyball team as it split its first two matches against far-away competition at the Emory University Classic on Friday.

The Muskies defeated Piedmont (Ga.) College 25-19, 25-22, 25-14 in their opening match on their long road trip before losing to Susquehanna (Pa.) University 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23. Lakeland is now 3-6 overall this season.

Errthum and Hannah Scherer (Fr.-Chillicothe, Ill.) both had 12 kills each against Piedmont (4-3). Brittini Scoles (So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) added nine kills as the Muskies hit a respectable .238 for the match with 45 kills and 20 errors in 105 attack attempts.

Caleigh Galvan (Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) added 17 digs defensively. Jessa Coker (Jr.-Macomb, Ill.) led the setters with 22 assists while Taylor Levitt (Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) added 10 assists.

The Muskies' second match against Susquehanna was competitive, with three of four sets close to the end. Lakeland particularly let an opportunity slip away in the fourth set, leading 23-22 late before missing a chance to push the match to a fifth set.

Errthum had 10 kills and Scherer added seven kills to lead the attack. Galvan led with 22 digs while Errthum and Brooke Aiazzi (Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) both added 15 digs each. Levitt also finished with 27 assists and two service aces, and Emilie Schartner (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) led the team with four blocks.

The Muskies play two more matches on Saturday, starting with a date at high noon with Emory, the No. 1-ranked team in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Lakeland also will face Birmingham Southern (Ala.) College at 2 p.m.
