Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Titans capitalize on opportunities to outlast game Muskies effort

The Lakeland College men's soccer team played on even terms for much of the match but the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the more opportunistic team and defeated the Muskies 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match.

Javier Simon scored a pair of goals and Trent Allison added an insurance tally for the Titans, who improved to 6-1-1 overall. Lakeland played well against a strong UW-Oshkosh team but dropped to 2-6 overall.

The visiting Titans controlled possession for a majority of the time, but the Muskies were able to slow them down and for the most part deny them quality chances. UW-Oshkosh held a 16-10 advantage in shot attempts but just a 5-4 margin in shots on goal.

Lakeland dodged several bullets early, including successive shots off the crossbar and post in the first half. The match was scoreless until the 27th minute, when the Titans took advantage of a Lakeland turnover in its own end. Simon collected a free ball from outside the penalty area and fired a shot past goalkeeper Logan Massey (Sr.-New Franken, Wis.) for the match's first goal.

The score was still tied at halftime and into the second half, with both teams having good shots early in the second period. UW-Oshkosh hit the crossbar again in the 54th minute, and the Muskies had perhaps their best chance just over a minute later when Charles Apostolik (Fr.-New Castle, Colo.) ran full speed onto a loose ball in front of the goal and punched the ball hard to the upper right corner, with UW-O goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska just getting a hand on it to deflect it away.

The Titans scored their second goal just over two minutes after that, as Michael Dugan crossed a pass from the right side to Simon in the middle and he poked it in for his second goal of the match. UW-Oshkosh added on its third goal exactly nine minutes later as Allison unloaded from 30 yards out and found the top shelf on the right side.

Lakeland had just one more shot attempt the rest of the way, when Renan Asato (Jr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) got off a shot that Gabrilska saved. Mirko Tadic (Sr.-Santiago, Chile) led the Muskies with three shots to lead the Muskies offensively while Franco Herrera (Sr.-Naucalpan, Mexico) and Zac Kline (Jr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) added two shots each.

The Muskies return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference competition when they face league power Dominican (Ill.) University on Saturday at noon in River Forest, Ill.
