Wisconsin Lutheran College stung the Lakeland College men's soccer team with a pair of goals 53 seconds apart on the way to defeating the Muskies 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
Lakeland was less than 20 minutes from its second conference win before the Warriors scored in the 73rd and 74th minutes to foil a quality effort. The Muskies dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Warriors moved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NACC.
Lakeland took the lead early in the second half after
Mirko Tadic (
Sr.-Santiago, Chile) was elbowed in the box, drawing a foul on WLC. He converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season to give the Muskies a 2-1 lead at 56:32 of the match.
Except for a shot by Matt Schmidt on a free kick after a foul, Lakeland was able to keep Wisconsin Lutheran from seriously threatening until a mistake hurt the cause. The Muskies were unable to control their own throw-in, and Austin Drake collected the ball and with the wind quickly fired from 25 yards out to tie the game at 72:45.
The Warriors struck again less than a minute later. Isaiah Gronholz crossed a pass left to right in keeper's area, and Teffie Joyce punched the ball in mid-air with his right foot, redirecting it into the left corner of the net at 73:38 to put WLC ahead. Lakeland had just one shot the rest of the way, when
Charles Apostolik (
Fr.-New Castle, Colo.) pushed a shot to the left from his left forward position with 9:17 left in the game.
The Muskies played the Warriors evenly in the field, outshooting WLC 14-12. The game reflected as much in the first half, when the two teams both scored to play to a 1-1 tie at the break.
Schmidt scored first for Wisconsin Lutheran, finding the net in the 25th minute with an assist from Drake for his first goal of the season. Lakeland answered in the 38th minute, though, as
Dylan Lange (
Fr.-Geneva, Ill.) outworked the defense for a loose ball and got it to
Renan Asato (
Jr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil), who hammered a shot from 30 yards out with the wind that beat goalkeeper Cedric Guichard to tie the score.
Apostolik led the Muskies with five shot attempts, a total that had several close misses, including a twisting shot into the wind just over three minutes after halftime that hit the right post. Tadic added four shots and Asato took three shots.
Thomis Mannebach (
So.-Florence, Wis.) made two saves in goal for the Muskies. Guichard made one save for WLC.
The Muskies are home again Saturday against Benedictine (Ill.) University at 1 p.m.
