Muskies drop pair of matches against stout opponents in Illinois

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Traveling south and playing in the heat, the Lakeland College women's soccer team came out on the short end of a pair of matches at a neutral site this weekend at the Illinois College Invitational.

The Muskies faced Westminster (Mo.) College on Saturday and were defeated 9-0 and then came back to play Spalding (Ky.) University on Sunday, falling by a 10-3 score. Lakeland is now 1-2 overall this season.

After going scoreless on Saturday, the Muskies found the back of the net three times on Sunday, hanging close against Spalding until the Golden Eagles pulled away in the second half.

Tiffany Fischer (So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Maddy Schone-Knoll (So.-Roscoe, Ill.), making the score 4-1 just before halftime. After a Spalding goal early in the second half, Lakeland answered as Mimi Pulido (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) curled in a corner kick off the keeper's hands to make it a three-goal game again.

The Golden Eagles came back with three goals in the next four minutes. The Muskies added a final goal in the 78th minute as Stephanie Figueroa (Fr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) scored unassisted for her third tally of the season.

Melissa Noll (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) made eight saves on Sunday and seven saves on Saturday in playing all 180 minutes in goal.

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday when it travels to face Lawrence University in Appleton for a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
