WINONA, Minn. – The Lakeland College women's volleyball team finished off two days of playing tough competition at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's (Minn.) University, dropping a pair of matches Saturday.
The Muskies opened the day against the nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, falling in three sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18. Lakeland then wrapped up the tourney with a three-set loss to UW-La Crosse, 25-22, 25-18, 25-15.
The Muskies were competitive in both losses, including in the first match of the day against a Pointers team ranked seventh in the AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Lakeland was close midway through all three sets but was unable to take a set against the national semifinalists from a year ago, who remained undefeated at 4-0 after the weekend.
Brittini Scoles (
So.-Kewaskum, Wis.) had seven kills to lead the Muskies' attack.
Caleigh Galvan (
Sr.-New Lenox, Ill.) was everywhere defensively with 25 digs,
Jessa Coker (
Jr.-Macomb, Ill.) had 11 assists and
Taylor Levitt (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) added 10 assists and 12 digs.
The Muskies faced another quality team in the second match and fell behind the Eagles (3-1 overall) by six points in the first set. Lakeland nearly came back to win the set, closing within two points late, but UW-L finished off the set and took control in each of the final two sets.
Allison Errthum (
So.-Joliet, Ill.) had nine kills to lead the attack and added 14 digs, while Galvan again led the defense with 22 digs. Levitt had 15 assists.
The Muskies are back home Tuesday to host a triangular with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Carroll University. Lakeland faces UW-Oshkosh at 4 p.m., Oshkosh and Carroll square off at 6 p.m. and the Muskies host Carroll at 8 p.m.
