Tanner Hackl (
Sr.-West De Pere, Wis.) scored 18 of his career-high 28 points in the second half and the Lakeland College men's basketball team rallied for a key 100-92 win over Rockford (Ill.) University Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies defeated the Regents for the second time in 15 days to clinch a sweep of the season series. Lakeland (10-6 overall, 6-6 NACC) tied Rockford (9-6 overall, 6-6 NACC) in the conference standings and now holds the tiebreaker should the two teams finish the regular season in a tie for positioning.
Hackl made 12 of 18 shots from the field, including 7 of 8 in the second half, and recorded his seventh double-double of the season. His contributions were key as the Muskies came back from a 41-35 halftime deficit with a rally reminiscent of the first meeting with the Regents.
Lakeland trailed by three at the half of that game but finished the game with a 19-8 run. This time the Muskies used a 20-6 spurt midway through the second half to get ahead and later went on a 10-3 run in the final minutes before icing the game at the free throw line.
Lakeland was red-hot from the field in the second half, shooting 23 of 33 over the final 20 minutes (69.9%). That included three-point range, where the Muskies hit 8 of 11 in the second half.
Brandon Hagenow (
Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) hit a three-pointer to put Lakeland ahead for good at 82-79 with 4:35 remaining. Rockford came back with a three-point play, but
Pat McDonald (
Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) hit another three and Hackl and Hagenow hit short jump shots, the latter making it 91-84 with 1:50 left.
The Regents closed within three at 93-90 with 25 seconds left when Zach Wallace scored and was fouled. Wallace missed the free throw, though, and
Joshuan McNeal (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) grabbed the rebound. McNeal then made one of two foul shots, but
Jacob Servais (
Jr.-Coon Valley, Wis.) kept the rebounds live long enough for McDonald to grab the board, and he would hit six of six free throws the rest of the way.
McDonald finished with 19 points, McNeal and
Brandon James (
So.-Rockford, Ill.) scored 14 and
Travis Kell (
Jr.-Madison, Wis.) added 12. Lakeland shot 52.9% (36 of 68) for the game and was 10 of 20 from three-point range and 18 of 24 (75.0%) from the line.
Wallace scored 20 points and Michael Murray added 18 for Rockford, which shot 56.5% (39 of 69) from the field but was just 12 of 20 (60.0%) from the free throw line, including four misses in the final 4:03.
Lakeland next faces Marian University on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Fond du Lac.
