Muskies outlast Duhawks in five for win in Loras Invite opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Kyle Krogstad (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) and Matt Stolz (Jr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) combined for 34 kills and the Lakleand College men's volleyball team won a dramatic fifth set to defeat Loras (Iowa) College Friday night on the first night of the Loras Invitational.

The Muskies fought back after losing the first set, going on to a 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 28-25, 15-12 victory to improve to 5-2 this season. Lakeland also defeated Loras for the second time this season as well as the second time in two weeks.

Krogstad recorded a career-high 18 kills, including a pair in the deciding fifth set, and also added 14 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Stolz notched 16 kills and added 11 digs, and he has now posted at least 13 kills in four of the Muskies' seven matches.

The fifth set was the closest of the match, with its six ties just one less than the first four sets combined and the three lead changes two more than the first four sets. Lakeland trailed 4-2 early in the fifth set but soon took control, taking advantage of three straight errors by Loras (3-4 overall) for an 8-5 lead.

The Duhawks rallied with four straight points to retake the lead, but the Muskies took it back after a service error, an attack error and a service ace by Addison Mertler (Fr.-Boca Raton, Fla.). Lakeland had two match points and won it on the second with a kill by Tim Robbins (Jr.-Wheaton, Ill.) clinching the win.

Mertler finished with 49 assists as the setter and also added nine digs and three block assists. Robbins posted nine kills and Casey Bolda (Jr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) added eight more kills. Christian Frahm (Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) recorded a match-high 17 digs and Desmond Williams (Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) added four blocks (one solo, three assisted).

Greg Kinney led Loras with 15 kills and added 14 digs, while Jimmy Combs added nine kills and six block assists.

Lakeland continues in the Loras Invite on Saturday with two more matches, facing Calumet College St. Joseph (Ind.) at 11 a.m. and Benedictine (Ill.) University at 4 p.m. Live video for both matches will be available at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/loras/.
