LISLE, Ill. – Benedictine (Ill.) University was able to slow down the hot play of the Lakeland College women's basketball team, defeating the Muskies 76-57 in a battle for position in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Eagles women's team used much the same formula as its men's team did earlier in the day against Lakeland, dominating the glass and coaxing the Muskies into a cold shooting day to complete the sweep of the day for the hosts. Benedictine also moved one game ahead in the NACC standings, improving to 10-4 in conference (13-6 overall) while Lakeland dropped to 9-5 in league play and 10-9 overall.
The Muskies shot just 32.8%, making 19 of 58 shots from the field. The Eagles also kept them from ramping up their three-point shooting, limiting Lakeland to a season low-tying 12 attempts from long range and four makes.
Benedictine also outrebounded the Muskies 49-25, recording double-digit positive margins in both halves, including a 23-13 lead in boards at the half as it built a 45-29 halftime lead.
Bailey Grayvold (
Jr.-Norway, Mich.) scored 20 points and made 7 of 9 field goal attempts to lead Lakeland.
Rachel Stankevich (
So.-Goodman, Wis.) added eight points and nine rebounds, while Grayvold,
Trista Barron (
Sr.-Escanaba, Mich.) and
Gaby Cappaert (
Sr.-Stephenson, Mich.) added three steals each. The Muskies lost for just the second time in their last 10 games.
Briana Hamilton led the Eagles with 12 points and was one of four players to score in double figures in a balanced attack. Nicole Botich added 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Eagles shot 50.0% and made excellent use of their 14 offensive rebounds, turning them into 25 second chance points.
Lakeland is on the road again Tuesday when it takes on Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Mequon.
