Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hogan provides early spark, Apostolik scores winner as Lakeland tops Edgewood

Josh Hogan (So.-Urbana, Ill.) scored a goal and added an assist and Charles Apostolik (So.-New Castle, Colo.) scored the go-ahead goal in the second half as the Lakeland University men's soccer team topped Edgewood College 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

Apostolik found the back of the net in the 68th minute to break a 2-2 tie and the Muskies nabbed their fourth win of the season and second in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Lakeland also defeated Edgewood for the first time since 2010 and did so on Senior Day for four members of the team.

Hogan and Apostolik were two of a number of players who helped the Muskies apply consistent offensive pressure throughout the match. Lakeland (4-11 overall, 2-5 NACC) outshot the Eagles 18-12, including 9-6 in each half, and five players finished with at least two shot attempts, including Apostolik, Hogan, Brian Herrmann (Jr.-Hortonville, Wis.), Dustin Garbe (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Renan Asato (Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil).

Herrmann scored the first goal of the match just 58 seconds in with an assist from Hogan, who made a run on the left side of the box, battling through defenders and getting it to Herrmann, who deflected the ball off the goalkeeper and into the net. Hogan then was the recipient of a pass from Bonny Figueroa (Fr.-El Cajon, Calif.) and scored his first collegiate goal at 30:50 of the match for a 2-0 Lakeland lead.

The Muskies had chances to have an even bigger lead at that point but couldn't convert on several prime opportunities early. Edgewood (6-10 overall, 3-5 NACC) made the hosts pay just 53 seconds after Hogan's goal as Garrett Lee headed in a corner kick by Jesse Greenwood for his 10th goal of the season.

The Eagles tied it 10:49 into the second half, as Greenwood assisted again, this time on a goal by Henry Simon. Lakeland started to make a push again soon after with several chances, including a boot from near midfield by Gustavo Ciarlariello (Jr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) that wound up just north of the crossbar. Apostolik scored less than five minutes later, receiving the ball from Tyler Norris (Fr.-Roscoe, Ill.) on the right side inside the box and scoring what became his first game-winner of the season.

The Muskies still had some nervous moments the rest of the way as the Eagles took five of their 11 corner kicks in the final 21 minutes. It was not always pretty, but Lakeland cleared all away successfully and allowed just one shot, an attempt by Simon with 1:37 left that was saved by Thomis Mannebach (Jr.-Florence, Wis.).

Mannebach made seven saves in goal to pick up his third win of the season. Herrmann attacked relentlessly from his forward spot and led the Muskies with five shot attempts, while Apostolik added four and Garbe finished with three.

Herrmann was one of four seniors honored before the match and was joined by defenders Garrett Jahnke (Jr.-Howards Grove, Wis.), Zac Kline (Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) and Josh Mann (Jr.-Washington Island, Wis.). The three juniors all have one season of eligibility remaining but are on schedule to graduate this year. Asato and Ciarlariello also are seniors this year but will have their Senior Day celebrated in the team's home finale, when family members from their native Brazil are able to be on hand.

Lakeland wraps up its home schedule Wednesday when it hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering at 3:30 p.m.
