Muskies close out men’s soccer season with loss to Falcons

MEQUON – The Lakeland University men's soccer team finished an improved season on a down note Wednesday with a 5-0 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin in wet and blustery conditions.

The Muskies lost to the defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season champions, who were playing for seeding in this year's conference tournament and clinched a spot in the top four in the conference this year. Lakeland finished its season with a 5-13 overall record and 3-7 in the NACC.

The Falcons (13-4 overall, 6-4 NACC) prevailed in miserable rainy and windy conditions, scoring twice early and then adding three more goals spread in the second half. Dagoberto Diaz scored in the 15th and 22nd minutes, and Patricio Martinez added two goals in the second half while Jordan Moehn also notched a goal and an assist.

Concordia finished with a 34-5 shot advantage and held the Muskies to one shot on goal. Charles Apostolik (So.-New Castle, Colo.) provided much of the pressure up front from his forward spot with three shot attempts. Renan Asato (Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil) and Tyler Norris (Fr.-Roscoe, Ill.) also added one shot attempt each.

Bradley Stoeckel (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) started in goal and made nine saves while allowing two goals. Bonny Figueroa (Fr.-El Cajon, Calif.) moved over from his midfield position to finish the game in goal and made two saves in his first action of the season there.

The game was the final for six members of the Lakeland team concluding their collegiate careers: Asato, Gustavo Zogobi Ciarlariello (Sr.-Sao Paolo, Brazil), Brian Herrmann (Jr.-Hortonville, Wis.), Garrett Jahnke (Jr.-Howards Grove, Wis.), Zac Kline (Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) and Josh Mann (Jr.-Washington Island, Wis.). All are either seniors in eligibility or are juniors but seniors academically on track to graduate this spring.

Lakeland finished the first season under coach Marc Baumbach with a three-game improvement in its overall record from a year ago and a two-game improvement in its conference mark. The Muskies also picked up their biggest win in years a week ago, defeating two-time defending NACC Tournament champion MSOE and even with Wednesday's loss finished 3-3 in their last six matches.
