Coming off its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference loss of the season, Lakeland University faces a tricky test Saturday against surging Concordia University Chicago at 1:30 p.m. at Concordia Stadium in River Forest, Ill.
The Muskies (4-3 overall, 2-1 NACC) were defeated by Wisconsin Lutheran 50-34 last week at Urban Field in Sheboygan.
Dezmon Eddie (
Fr.-Alexandria, La.) gained over 100 yards rushing (140 yards) and receiving (115) and rushed for touchdowns of 47, 35 and 21 yards, but Lakeland couldn't hold a 20-6 lead after one quarter and was outscored 26-7 in the second half and lost a conference game for the first time since the 2014 season.
Concordia (4-3 overall, 2-1 NACC) scored a big win in the battle of Concordias last week, defeating Concordia Wisconsin 48-38 on the road in Mequon. Lance Moise rushed 27 times for 282 yards and three touchdowns and Rob Granqust passed for 306 yards and four touchdowns, including three to Rashad Lofton, who caught seven passes for 144 yards.
Concordia Chicago finished just 5-24 over the last three years but is now just one win from tying its win total over those three years. It is doing so with a high-powered offense that is averaging 34 points per game and already features a 1,000-yard rusher in Moise, a pair of quarterbacks (Granquist and Shane Virnala) who combined have thrown for 1,920 yards and 22 touchdowns, and a receiver in Lofton who already has 705 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns.
Former Lakeland coach Randy Awrey is in his fourth year leading the Concordia program. Awrey coached at Lakeland from 1994-98, compiling a 35-14-1 record in that time. His 1997 Muskie team posted a 10-0 record, one of only two undefeated seasons in school history, and his .710 winning percentage is the best of any football coach in Lakeland history.
Saturday's game time was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but was moved back one-half hour and will now start at 1:30 p.m.
