The Lakeland University football team steps out of conference one more time this season and faces a new opponent when it travels to take on Adrian (Mich.) College Saturday afternoon at noon Central time at Adrian's Docking Stadium.
The preseason favorites in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association will square off in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Lakeland will look to continue its recent success against the MIAA after having won its last two games against teams from the league.
The Muskies (3-1 overall)Â handled bad weather and a mud-covered field last week, defeating Concordia Wisconsin 16-7 in their NACC debut for the season. Lakeland won on Homecoming retained the Cheese Bowl for the third straight year with a stout defensive effort, allowing the Falcons just 115 yards of total offense. The Muskies did what they needed to do on offense, as
Michael Whitley (
Jr.-Vidalia, La.) rushed for a pair of scores and also converted two two-point conversion plays.
Adrian (2-2 overall) is coming off a 28-21 win over Albion (Mich.) 28-21 in both teams' MIAA opener last week. Backup quarterback Hunter Hamm came on late and led the game-winning drive, taking Adrian 63 yards in just under four minutes and throwing a five-yard touchdown pass to Joey Koscielski for the go-ahead score with 1:36 left in the game.
While the team will take a six-hour bus ride to Saturday's game, it will also be a homecoming for 23 Muskies football players from the state of Michigan. That includes 18 players from the Lower Peninsula of the state, many from the Detroit area which is just over an hour away from Adrian.
