Concordia University Chicago scored six unanswered second half goals to top the Lakeland University women's soccer team 6-1 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match on the Muskies' home field.
The Muskies possessed a halftime lead but were unable to hold up in the second half as injuries and consistent pressure by the visitors took a toll. Lakeland dropped to 2-10-1 overall and 1-4 in the NACC, while Concordia improved to 8-4-1 and 4-2 in conference play.
The Muskies took a lead just 3:29 into the match when
Stephanie Figueroa (
So.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) crossed a pass from the right wing in front of the goal.
Abby Mauer (
Fr.-Waldo, Wis.) was in position to pressure the goalkeeper and deflected the ball enough for it to get past the keeper and trickle over the goal line, scoring in her fourth consecutive match for a 1-0 lead.
The match stayed that way until halftime, with both teams having their moments of control. Concordia controlled possession for a good share of the half and held a 7-3 lead in shots at one point, but Lakeland tilted the field late in the half and began to apply pressure.
Rachel Hasko (
Fr.-Racine, Wis.) hit the crossbar with a shot from the left side and Mauer also had a shot on goal that was saved in the 36th minute.
Injuries became a factor late in the first half, though, and even more of a problem in the second.
Zeni Yacab (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) and
Brianne Frank (
Sr.-Plain, Wis.) both exited in the first half due to injury, and
Meagan Simmons (
Fr.-Troy, Ill.) left shortly into the second half. An already short roster was stretched even further even as Yacab returned, and the Cougars pounced quickly after halftime.
Sarah LaCost scored three consecutive goals in a span of 7:28, and a 1-0 Lakeland lead was quickly flipped into a 3-1 deficit with 30 minutes left to play. Concordia added another goal in the 63rd minute and separate scores in the 70th and 80th minutes, outshooting the Muskies 17-2 in the second half.
Mauer led the Muskies with four shot attempts while Hasko added two shots.
Makenna Waller (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) also did good work in the midfield again and added two shots.
Karisa Rowland (
Fr.-Peoria, Ariz.) made six saves in goal before departing late.
Mikenzie Howarth (
Fr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) came on and made two saves and allowed one goal.
Lakeland takes to the road Wednesday to face Marian University. The match will be played under the lights in Fond du Lac at 7 p.m.
