Lakeland plays for NACC title, playoff berth Saturday at Rockford

The Lakeland University football team looks to clinch its second straight NCAA Division III playoff appearance when it travels to face Rockford University Saturday for a noon kickoff at Sam Greeley Field in Rockford, Ill.

The Muskies (6-3 overall, 4-1 NACC) will clinch a share of the conference title if they can win on Saturday, taking a share of the league for the third year in a row. Lakeland enters Saturday tied with Aurora University and Benedictine University for the top spot in the league, and the Spartans and Eagles will also meet on Saturday, but the Muskies will have the tiebreaker over either team and thus will clinch an NCAA playoff spot with a win.

Lakeland has won its last two games and steamrolled to a 55-25 win over Aurora last week on Senior Day. The Muskies rolled up 731 yards of offense in handing the Spartans their first NACC loss of the season. Michael Whitley (Jr.-Vidalia, La.) set a new school single-game record for total offense with 576 yards, including career highs in passing (439) and rushing (137) yards. Donte Rowell (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) led the defense with a big day including an interception and a fumble recovery as Lakeland forced three Aurora turnovers.

Rockford (1-8 overall, 1-4 NACC) lost a heartbreaking 49-46 decision at Concordia Wisconsin last week to remain winless in the NACC. The Regents took a 46-41 lead with 52 seconds left in the game on a touchdown pass by Andrew Perez to Kalan Miller, but the Falcons scored the winning touchdown on a 41-yard touchdown pass with just 32
seconds left for the winning points in a wild game that included eight lead changes.
