Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second quarter the difference as Knights top Muskies for Tip-Off title

Ali Spayde scored a game-high 20 points and drained six three-pointers and Calvin (Mich.) College won its first Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament title by defeating the Lakeland University women's basketball team 58-39 Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Spayde made the difference on offense and received tournament most valuable player honors as the Knights (3-0 overall) took control in the second quarter and made the trip from Grand Rapids pay off with a championship. Lakeland dropped to 1-2 overall and came up short of winning its seventh title in the 13-year history of the Tip-Off Tournament.

The Muskies were done in by a dry spell of 10 minutes 56 seconds in the first half, including more than eight minutes of the second quarter. After the teams went back-and-forth in the opening minutes, Calvin went on a 20-0 run over that time, including three three-pointers by Spayde, and Lakeland faced a serious uphill climb the rest of the way that it could never complete.

The Knights outscored the Muskies 18-3 in the second quarter and led 30-11 at halftime. Calvin eventually stretched the lead out as far as 24 points when Spayde hit another triple to make it 44-20 with 2:23 left in the third quarter, though Lakeland was able to rally some and apply some pressure the rest of the way.

The Muskies scored the final seven points of the third quarter to get within 44-27, and eventually got as close as 14 when a Kayla Clark (Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) steal and feed to Alison Huber (Fr.-Washburn, Wis.) for a layup made it 48-34 with 3:55 left.

Bailey Grayvold (Sr.-Norway, Mich.) led the Muskies with 16 points and also received all-tournament honors, but Lakeland finished shooting 14 of 53 from the field (26.4%), including 4 of 27 in the first half, and no other player scored more than six points. Maddy Doll (Jr.-Florence, Wis.) added seven rebounds.

Spayde hit 7 of 15 from the field, including 6 of 14 from three-point range. She led the attack as Calvin hit 9 of 21 three-point attempts, offsetting the team's 34.8% overall shooting (16 of 46) and 23 turnovers, including eight in the fourth quarter as Lakeland turned up the pressure defensively.

Anna Timmer added 13 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Calvin and Bre Luurtsema also totaled 10 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots, and both players also were selected to the all-tournament team.

In Saturday's consolation game for third place, the University of Dubuque used a big second half to pull away from Mount Mary University 83-40. The Spartans outscored the Blue Angels 38-15 in the final 20 minutes. Dubuque's Emily Brinker and Mount Mary's Rae Grubbs rounded out the six-player all-tournament team.

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 5 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium. The Pointers are ranked 22nd in the D3hoops.com top 25 preseason poll.
