Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Muskies pull away late to get win No. 1 of season

MADISON – The Lakeland University men's basketball team held Edgewood College without a field goal for more than seven minutes late during a game-deciding run and picked up its first win of the season by a 77-65 score Saturday afternoon at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Muskies went on a 13-2 run late in the game to finally shake the Eagles and get their first win of the season while evening their record in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games. Lakeland improved to 1-3 overall while Edgewood lost its NACC opener and is now 0-2 on the young season.

The Muskies got a number of solid individual performances in a game that they led for most of the way but struggled to put away until the final minutes. That included contributions from several players off the bench who provided lifts at key times.

Mitchell School (Sr.-Birnamwood, Wis.) and Ben Stasewich (So.-Munising, Mich.) both scored career highs with seven points each off the bench. Carlos Campos (Fr.-Janesville, Wis.) also added four points, and in all a total of five players scored off the bench for Lakeland as it got 20 points and 14 rebounds from its reserves.

School scored four straight points late in the first half as the Muskies built a 38-32 halftime lead, and Campos also scored a pair of baskets in the first half. School also had a three-pointer as part of the deciding run late in the game, when the Muskies pulled away after Edgewood had closed within 62-60 with seven minutes left.

Stasewich scored seven straight points for Lakeland early in the second half, including a three-point play for his first points of the season. He also added a career-high eight rebounds, helping the Muskies out-rebound the Eagles 39-31.

Joshuan McNeal (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) and Pat McDonald (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) scored 15 points each to lead Lakeland, and McNeal also added 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Brandon James (Jr.-Rockford, Ill.) also added 13 points.

Lakeland shot 44.6% (25 of 56) and limited the Eagles to 39.2% shooting (20 of 51). Tyler Lemke scored 18 points to lead Edgewood.

The Muskies are back home Wednesday when they welcome Concordia University Wisconsin for a 7 p.m. tip at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
