The Lakeland University men's basketball team delivered its best offensive performance of the season and pulled away from Silver Lake College for an 89-58 win Friday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies scored the game's first eight points and never trailed in defeating their counterparts from nearby Manitowoc. Lakeland remained perfect in 10 all-time meetings with the Lakers and got its second win of the season, improving to 2-5 overall.
The Muskies recorded season highs in field goal percentage, three-pointers made and assists and got contributions from a number of players. The hosts shot 50.0% (36 of 72), including 12 of 26 from three-point range.
Lakeland jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the early going and never let the lead get below double figures the rest of the way. Silver Lake (3-11 overall) did hang around for 30 minutes and rallied from a 50-29 halftime deficit to draw within 61-48 with 14:03 left, but the Lakers ran out of gas after that and would not score again for more than eight minutes. The Muskies scored 17 consecutive points in that span to blow the game wide open.
Pat McDonald (
So.-Port Washington, Wis.) scored 23 points, hitting 8 of 12 from the field including 4 of 5 from three-point range.
Eric Nygaard (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) also added 16 points and nine rebounds, converting 7 of 9 field goal tries, and
Brandon James (
Jr.-Rockford, Ill.) returned to the lineup and added 12 points and five assists.
Joshuan McNeal (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Luka Jovicic scored 15 points and pulled down a game high 15 rebounds to lead the Lakers, who are in their first year competing as a member of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Silver Lake shot 39.3% (24 of 61) and committed 19 turnovers.
The Muskies return to the court Wednesday when they host Finlandia (Mich.) University for another non-conference game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
