Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Muskies furnish the last minute heroics this time to beat MSOE

Kayla Clark (Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 23 seconds left in the game and the Lakeland College women's basketball team earned its biggest win yet this season with a satisfying 64-60 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night.

The Muskies defeated one of the top four teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference for the first time this season and did so after trailing much of the way. Lakeland also moved closer to clinching a spot in the six-team NACC Tournament and has clinched at least a tie for sixth with three regular season games left.

The Muskies (12-10 overall, 11-6 NACC) also turned the tables from the teams' first meeting in January, when MSOE rallied from eight points down with five minutes left to come back and win in the final minute. This time, it was Lakeland trailing by seven points with four minutes to play before finishing the game on a 13-2 run.

The Muskies trailed by as many as nine and never led in the second half until the final half minute of play. Lakeland showed resilience, fighting through some cold shooting from the perimeter to remain in hot pursuit every time it appeared the Raiders (15-7 overall, 13-4 NACC) were ready to pull away.

Clark's three from the right corner made it 62-60 and marked the team's fourth three-pointer in 24 attempts. The Muskies then got a defensive stop by, finally putting the clamps on MSOE star Holly Denfeld, who scored 29 points and added 13 rebounds and at one point in the second half made 9 of 10 field goal attempts.

Denfeld caught the ball in the paint and tried to spin, but her shot was blocked by Maddy Doll (So.-Florence, Wis.) and went out of bounds off the Raiders. Bailey Grayvold (Jr.-Norway, Mich.) then made two free throws, and MSOE missed two final three-point tries in the final seconds.

Lakeland also stayed in the game in the second half with some good work on the boards, particularly from Rachel Stankevich (So.-Goodman, Wis.), who was a tornado on the glass with14 rebounds-including seven on the offensive end-as well as 18 points. Her work helped the Muskies outrebound the visitors 21-18 in the second half after having been on the wrong end of a 31-18 rebounding margin in the first half.

Grayvold scored 15 points, including 12 points in the second half, when she made all five field goal attempts and was able to get into the lane and finish on multiple occasions. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and added five assists, including an assist on the eventual game-winning basket.

Clark also scored 14 points for the Muskies, who shot 34.3% for the game (23 of 67) but 45.5% in the second half when they made 15 of 33 shots. Lakeland also committed just nine turnovers, half the total of 18 by the Raiders.

Besides Denfeld, Jamie Spanbauer was the only other player in double figures with 12 points off the bench. MSOE shot 36.5% (23 of 63) for the game.

Lakeland now travels to face Alverno College on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
