Benedictine (Ill.) University completed the first perfect regular season in school history while the Lakeland College men's basketball team saw its season come to a close in a 100-76 loss Saturday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Eagles showed why they are ranked second nationally in the latest NCAA Division III D3Hoops.com top 25 poll. Benedictine completed the regular season with a 25-0 record, including a 20-0 mark in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, the best regular season in the 10-year history of the conference.
On the other hand, Lakeland saw its season come to the close, a fate it knew entering the game when Milwaukee School of Engineering defeated Rockford (Ill.) University 80-66 earlier in the day. MSOE ensured no worse than a tie with the Muskies in the final regular season standings, and by sweeping the season series against Lakeland clinched the sixth and final spot in the NACC Tournament.
The Muskies (13-12 overall, 9-11 NACC) got a glimpse of their foes' power from the start as Benedictine raced to a 31-8 lead in the game's first 12 minutes. The Eagles made 10 of their first 13 shots from the field while Lakeland was as cold as the visitors were hot, missing 15 of its first 18 shot attempts.
Benedictine took a 49-28 lead into halftime. The Muskies made a brief run early in the second half, scoring 10 straight points to get within 55-38 after a three-pointer by
Pat McDonald (
Fr.-Port Washington, Wis.) with 16:19 to play. Lakeland got no closer, though, and the Eagles stayed red-hot from the field and rebuilt their lead back up as high as 27 points late.
Tanner Hackl (
Sr.-West De Pere, Wis.) led the Muskies with 15 points and eight rebounds, including 12 points in the second half. McDonald scored 14 and
Brandon Hagenow (
Sr.-Sussex, Wis.) added 12 points plus a team-high four assists.
Jacob Servais (
Jr.-Coon Valley, Wis.) gave Lakeland good minutes and fight off the bench with eight points and eight rebounds.
Brandon James (
So.-Rockford, Ill.) scored nine points and
Zach Van Engen (
Sr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) added six points and three assists.
Lakeland shot 43.1% (31 of 72) but was just 4 of 16 from three-point range and 10 of 21 from the free throw line.
Luke Johnson led Benedictine with 25 points and 17 rebounds, Tim Reamer added 24 points and 11 reboundsa nd Michael Blaszczyk scored 19 points. The Eagles shot 58.2% (39 of 67) and also outrebounded the Muskies 45-35.
The game was the final one for three Lakeland seniors-Hackl, Hagenow and Van Engen. All three were honored before the game as part of Senior Night activities.
