MARQUETTE, Mich. –
Taylor Bush (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) threw an eight-inning no-hitter in her first collegiate start, highlighting the Lakeland College softball team's season-opening weekend at the Finlandia (Mich.) University Dome Tournament at the Superior Dome.
Bush allowed no hits and no walks, allowing three base runners total in the Muskies' 1-0 win over UW-Superior Saturday night. It was Lakeland's first no-hitter since Sara Roberts and Cori Zornacki combined for a five-inning no-hitter against Maranatha Baptist April 28, 2009, and the program's first complete-game no-no since Roberts defeated Marian University 2-0 April 24, 2007.
Bush struck out five and faced two batters over the minimum. The Yellowjackets' Brittany Thomforda led off the game by reaching on an error but was eventually erased on a double play, and a hit batter in the fourth inning never advanced past third base.
UW-Superior also had a runner placed at second base in the top of the eighth as international tiebreaker rules were used. Bailey Armstrong led off by laying down a sacrifice bunt to move Macy Hanson to third, and Kari Shipman followed with a bouncer in front of the plate. Rather than throw to first to get the out, though, Lakeland held the ball, resulting in a fielder's choice, and it worked out when Bush struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
The Muskies quickly capitalized in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Meghan Etten (
Fr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) came in to run at second base, and
Carly Brault (
So.-Brillion, Wis.) ended the game with a run-scoring double to bring in Etten with the winning run for the team's first win of the season.
Lakeland played a total of four games on the weekend, also losing to Simpson (Iowa) College 4-3 in its opener on Saturday and then playing twice on Sunday, falling to UW-Oshkosh 12-7 before wrapping up with a 10-0 trouncing of Finlandia in its finale.
In the final game, the Muskies jumped on the host Lions with all 10 runs coming in the first three innings. Lakeland needed only six hits of its own, also capitalizing on six walks and two hit batters.
Jocelyn Yeager (
Jr.-Elm Grove, Wis.) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and hit a three-run home run.
Rylee Garand (
Fr.-Punta Gorda, Fla.) also had two hits and
Rosa Gonzalez (
So.-Elwood, Ill.) also drove in a pair with a two-run double in the first inning.
A.J. Zickuhr (
Fr.-Bettendorf, Iowa) pitched a five-inning shutout, scattering six hits and walking four for her first collegiate win.
Lakeland also was close in both of its losses, including holding a three-run lead in the middle of the sixth inning against Oshkosh before the Titans exploded for eight runs.
Angela Tribuzio (
So.-Huntley, Ill.) hit a grand-slam home run to put the Muskies ahead in the fifth inning, part of a three-hit day, but UWO took advantage of seven hits and two errors in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead.
Lakeland now prepares for its spring break trip to Florida where it will play 10 games over six days, opening against Moravian (Pa.) College March 6 at 2 p.m. Central time.
